Amateur Radio is often called Ham Radio. Amateur Radio is a fascinating, scientific hobby and public service enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. An Amateur Radio operator, also known as a HAM or Radio amateur, uses advanced Wireless Radio equipment to communicate with other Radio Amateurs from any corner of the world, for public service, recreation and self-training.

The term Amateur does not mean lack of skill, but simply indicates that the frequencies involved in Radio communication conducted by HAMs cannot be used for commercial purposes. An Amateur Radio Operator or A HAM usually has to qualify an examination proving his skill before being licensed as an Amateur Radio Operator by their nation’s official government organizations. HAMs enjoy personal Wireless communication with friends, or even strangers from all over the world. They support the community with emergency and disaster communications.

HAM activities increase HAM’s knowledge of Electronics and Radio theory.

That’s ok, but what is the meaning of HAM ???

Well! There have been many speculations about the origin of the word HAM. Some believe that the word HAM is made out of the names of three scientists…Hertz, Armstrong and Marconi. The universally accepted speculation is HAM = Help All Mankind…which truly reflects the nature of Amateur Radio Operators community. HAMs, all over the world, have provided efficient communication during natural calamities such as earthquakes, storms, floods etc.
